The Obama Administration has launched a new weapon in the battle for the White House this voting season – Nurses For Obama. Nurses from all over the country have been recruited to spread the word about healthcare and the reforms put in motion by the Obama Administration.
The healthcare reforms that were fought over bitterly by both Republicans and Democrats have already had an impact on our healthcare system. Nurses are the perfect mouthpiece for this part of President Obama’s campaign to continue his presidency. Why? Because nurses are on the front lines of all healthcare services. Day in and day out these men and women are the first people to see the impact that the reform measures have had on the healthcare system and patients.
Nurses for Obama, has chapters in every state. Nurses are given resources and materials in order to share the word about healthcare reform. Many nurses have pointed out that before the reforms were put in place, they interacted with patients that had to ignore doctor’s orders because of insurance difficulties. Medication and services may not have been covered, had too high of a co-pay, or the patients had deductibles that made it impossible for them to receive proper care in a timely manner.
The new law that Nurses for Obama are excited about if the Affordable Care Act. With the new law over 47 million Americans can now receive free medical services from annual checkups to free mammograms. Children that have pre-existing health conditions may not be denied insurance coverage and lifetime ‘coverage caps’ are no longer allowed to be placed by insurance companies. Adults with pre-existing conditions that have not had insurance for over 6 months can receive coverage from the government, this is especially important for people with chronic, long term illness.
According to the Barack Obama website (http://www.barackobama.com/record/health-care) by 2014 all Americans will have access to affordable medical insurance. It is estimated that about 95% of Americans will finally have full healthcare coverage.
Nurses for Obama will be talking to Americans about how they see the reforms in action. Many of the nurses are directly impacted by the reforms as they face the same challenges as the rest of Americans when it comes to medical coverage. Working in a hospital does not give a person free healthcare and nurses are sometimes unable to afford their own insurance or medications!
