Wyoming’s schools offer a two year Associate’s Degree and four year Bachelor’s degree programs for Registered Nursing (RN) degrees. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) often have approximately a year’s worth of training in order to take the state ‘boards.’ As with any degree, the amount of time you spend in school depends on the number of classes you can handle at once. Expect that you will have to complete courses that may not seem to have anything to do with your degree, but most colleges have core classes that are required for a degree. For example, you may have to take a social studies course or even a creative writing class. Also, make sure you choose an accredited, state approved school for your training.
After a Wyoming graduate is declared eligible by the board of nursing to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) they will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter. You must bring this letter when you report for testing, or you will not be admitted. You will have to reapply to take the test, losing your testing fees as well. All fees are non-refundable. Once you pass the NCLEX, you will need to obtain a license. As with all states, Wyoming is a mandatory licensure state, meaning you will have to acquire a license before being able to practice. Wyoming is not a Nursing Licensure Compact State therefore a license issued from the state is required to practice here. Licenses are available from the Wyoming State Board of Nursing. The fee for a two-year license for RNs and LPNs is $130. Individuals with licenses from other states are allowed to apply for a Wyoming license provided they meet all of the state’s educational requirements.
