People embarking on a career in nursing should be aware that employment in the field is rewarding and challenging. Nurses are the front line in hospitals and doctor’s offices and, as such, the benefits can be fantastic. The profession brings out the best in people and is always in demand. If you are creative, resourceful, hard-working and dedicated, then a career in nursing could be just for you. Nursing is an occupation in which you have room to grow and achieve job security as well as advancement. Because of high demand in the industry, the market is competitive and the pay is attractive. Nurses are often able to travel the world and find work wherever they go.
Wisconsin has many different schooling opportunities but be careful to select one that is approved by the state. Registered Nurses (RNs), in Wisconsin, must complete either a two year program for an Associate’s Degree or a four year curriculum for a Bachelor’s Degree. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) courses usually take about a year to complete. Obviously, the length of time that it takes you to complete your education will depend on the amount of credit hours you are able to complete per semester.
After you have finished your classes and have your degree, the next step towards practicing nursing is the exam. Wisconsin uses the standard American National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) and the application can be found either at your school or online. You will need to fill out the application and send it in with a fee. The sitting fee is non-refundable. Once your application has been approved, you will be able to sit for the ‘boards.’ Wisconsin is not a Nursing Licensure Compact participant, so an active license issued in the state is required for all practicing nurses. Nursing licenses are issued by the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing. The fee for a nurse’s license is $90.00, plus $10.00 if you want the temporary license as well.
A Wisconsin Nurse’s License is valid for two years. The renewal currently costs $82.00. Make sure to renew before your current license expires to avoid costly fees, not to mention that you cannot practice while your license is expired.
