After making sure that the school of your choice is state approved, you will have a few choices in the courses you decide to take and the length of your stay at school. If you are intending to train as a Registered Nurse (RN), you will have to decide whether you want to spend two years to obtain an Associate’s Degree, or if you want to go the full four years for a Bachelor’s. Keep in mind that the time it takes you to train could vary, especially considering your ability to take a full time course load. Also, you may not be able to finish your training as quickly if you are attending school at night.
After you obtain your degree or diploma, you will need to apply for testing to gauge your proficiency and your ability to be a safe and productive nurse. There will be a testing fee which is not refundable, even if you do not sit for the ‘board.’ The National Council on Licensure Exam (NCLEX) is the standard ‘board’ test used by all states. You must pass this test to be eligible to apply for a nursing license in the state of Vermont. If you do not pass the test, you can apply to retake it. You will have to pay another testing fee, however. The required nursing licenses are available from the Vermont State Board of Nursing. Vermont is not a participating member of the Nursing Licensure Compact, therefore anyone who wishes to practice nursing in the state will have to apply for a license here. Individuals coming from other states to practice in Vermont will be subject to a $150.00 application fee.
Vermont’s nursing licenses are valid for two years and renewal is required to continue practicing. The renewal fees for both RNs and LPNs are $95.00.
