Healthcare is one of the most reliable and secure industries in the work force. Positions can often be found in doctor’s offices, nursing home and hospitals. The pay and benefits are very competitive. Nurses are on the front lines in the healthcare industry. Always in demand, they fill many roles in many different departments and industries. The job is often rewarding and challenging. A career in nursing is a good fit for anyone who is caring and kind as well as determined and goal oriented. With the proper education and testing, you can be on your way to a career as a nurse.
Anyone who wants to train to become a Registered Nurse (RN) will have a choice of either a two year Associate’s degree program or a four year Bachelor’s degree. Keep in mind that the amount of time you spend in school will vary depending on your availability and the amount of classes you can take per semester. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) will have shorter training, usually amounting to about one year of schooling.
In order to obtain a license to practice nursing, you will need to take and pass the National Council on Licensure Exam (NCLEX). There is an application which you can obtain from either your school or the internet. There is also a sitting fee, which is non-refundable. The test itself will verify that you are knowledgeable and will be a safe and efficient addition to the healthcare community. You must pass this test to be eligible to apply for a Utah nursing license. If you do not pass, you may reapply to retake the test. After you pass the NCLEX, you will be ready to obtain your Utah Nursing License. Without this license, you will not be able to practice. The application form is available from the Utah State Board of Nursing. Utah is a participating Nursing Licensure Compact state, so anyone who holds a license from a state that also participates may practice nursing in Utah. If you are going to permanently reside in Utah, however, you will need to obtain a license from that state.
Utah’s nursing licenses are valid for two years and costs $68.00 to renew for RNs and $58.00 for LPNs. Make sure to renew well before your expiration date, otherwise you will not be able to practice until your license has been renewed.
