After choosing a state approved school, you will be ready to choose your program. If you are interested in becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) Tennessee has two different options. First, is the Associate’s Degree, and the second is the Bachelor’s Degree. They will take approximately two and four years to complete, respectively. These programs could take longer to complete depending on the amount of classes you are able to take at once. Should you choose to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) your courses should take about one year to complete.
The standard test to measure competency among potential nurses is called the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). This is the test that is referred to as the ‘boards.’ You will need to obtain an application either from your school or the state board of nursing. Send it in with the non-refundable application fee and your testing information will be mailed to you. It is imperative that you pass this test if you are seeking nursing licensure. Tennessee requires the passing of the NCLEX for licensing. If you do not pass the test, you can apply to retake it again. Once you have passed the NCLEX, your next step is licensure. In Tennessee, nursing licenses are regulated by the Department of Health. The application for licensure can be downloaded from their website. Tennessee is a Nursing Licensure Compact State, so any practicing nurse with a valid license from one of these states is permitted to work here. Anyone wishing to permanently live or work in this state will have to apply for a new license.
Tennessee nursing licenses expire after two years. The renewal can be done online, and the fee is $90.00 to renew. This state also requires additional training for renewal.
