The word nurse brings to mind a kind and thoughtful caregiver. Women and men the world over are finding satisfying careers in the healthcare industry. Always in demand, nurses are a hot commodity in today’s job market. The field is competitive and the pay is rewarding, often out-pacing most other industries. Employment is stable in the industry and facilities are almost always hiring. It is not hard to find work as a nurse.
If you are ready to embark on a career in nursing, your first step is education. Be careful when you select a school because South Dakota requires graduation from a state approved nursing program for licensure. If you think that a career in nursing is for you, you must decide on whether you would like to be a Registered Nurse (RN) or a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Most schools offer two choices for Registered Nursing degree candidates. An Associate’s Degree program will take about two years to complete and a Bachelor’s Degree will take about four years. Remember, though, the amount of time you spend in school will be determined by your full or part time status as a student. Licensed Practical Nurses will train for approximately one year for certification.
Upon finishing your education, your next step towards your nursing career is to pass the ‘boards.’ All states now use the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to determine your ability to be a safe and competent nurse. The application for this test can be obtained from either your school or the Board of Nursing’s website. There is a separate test for RNs and LPNs. It is mandatory for you to pass this test in order to be a licensed nurse. You can retake this test if you do not pass. Once you have passed the NCLEX, you are now ready to apply for licensure. In South Dakota, nursing licensing is regulated by the state Board of Nursing. You will need to complete the application for licensure which can be found online. South Dakota does not participate in the Nursing Licensure Compact, so any nurse wishing to practice in this state will need to apply for a new license here.
Renewal of nursing licenses in South Dakota is due every two years. There is a $90.00 renewal fee and there are continuing education requirements. Contact the state’s Board of Nursing for more information.
