Before enrolling in any school, make sure it is state approved. South Carolina requires graduation from an approved nursing program for licensure. South Carolina’s schools offer two year Associate’s Degree and four year Bachelor’s Degree courses for Registered Nurses (RNs). Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) training takes about a year on average to complete. Keep in mind that your program could take longer for you to complete if you are only able to handle a part time class schedule.
All states require aspiring nurses to pass the ‘boards.’ The standard test for all fifty states is called the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). This test will measure your competence and your ability to be a safe and capable member of the healthcare community. Either your school or the South Carolina Board of Nursing’s website will have the application you will need to fill out to sit for the test. There is an application fee due with the form, and it is non-refundable. You must pass this test to be able to apply for a nursing license in South Carolina. If you do not pass, you may reapply to take it until you do. Once you have successfully passed the NCLEX, you are now eligible to apply for nursing licensure. In South Carolina, the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation’s Board of Nursing handles nursing licenses. You will need to fill out their application, which can be found online, and provide documentation of your schooling and your NCLEX results. South Carolina is not a Nursing Licensure Compact state, so to practice here you will need to have a valid license from this state.
Renewal terms,in South Carolina, are every two years and there is a $64.00 license renewal fee. Also, to renew you will need to have received at least thirty contact hours of continuing education.
