Nursing is a strong career for people from all walks of life. Finding and enrolling in a nursing program is one way that many people have found their way out of a dead end career. In a nursing career many find the financial gain is great, and compared to some careers, the educational length is not long. Nurses provide a plethora of services for patients. They treat wounds, provide emotional support, and can consult with patients or families concerning day to day health.
In Oklahoma, there are no online programs that will train you to become a nurse, but there are continuing education classes for nurses and you may also complete prerequisite credits with online colleges.
Oklahoma has over thirty different approved programs for nursing training. Each offers the one year Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) program, the two year Registered Nurses (RN) program (Associate's) and the four year BSN RN program (Bachelor's). As in other states, nursing students spend a portion of their time in the classroom. When nearing the end of their training, students will spend most of their training in clinicals. These skills training classes are held in hospitals and other facilities in an effort to teach nursing students how to handle 'live' situations that will arise on the job.
After training, all students will be expected to sit for 'the boards' in order to gain their license. The 'boards' refers to the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and is the same across the nation. Students apply for approval from the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing. The board will mail a rejection or approval letter to the student. Once this has arrived, the student may schedule an exam. Licenses are issued by the administrative company, Pearson Vue. This company holds a contract with most boards of nursing throughout the United States. If test takers pass the NCLEX, the license for LPN or RN is issued. A hard copy of the license is mailed and will arrive in the mail in about four to six weeks. Oklahoma does not participate in the National Licensure Compact. Nurses may apply for licensure through endorsement if they move to the state from another. Nurses from outside of the United States may need to retake training if the training in their country is not comparable to the training in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma sends out renewal notifications to all nurses due every two years. Fees vary based on the degree earned. Extra fees may apply if the nurse has allowed their license to lapse.
