In today's new global economy, security in a career can be hard to find. With the higher demand for good healthcare, nursing is rapidly becoming a career of choice. Long term stability in this field is sustained by the growing population of senior citizens that need nurses in facilities such as nursing homes. Nurses are the heart and soul of the healthcare field. Nurses provide care, comfort, and emotional support on a day to day basis.
To become a nurse, in Ohio, you will need to find and enroll in a training program that is approved by the state's board of nursing. Federal guidelines provide the basic rules for nurses throughout the nation, while other rules are provided by a state level. Boards of nursing keep records of all complaints, infractions, and licenses for every nurse in the state. There are programs for Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) that are about one year in total length. Registered Nurses (RNs) may choose an Associate's degree (2 years) or a Bachelor's degrees (4 years). All studies have a classroom portion and clinical (manual skills). The clinicals allow nurses to become familiar with working in a live setting with real patients.
After a student finishes school, they will need to take the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) to gain their license, no matter which degree they have chosen. The state nursing board requires that students apply for approval for testing. When applying, the students must pay the processing fee. This will not be refunded. The test itself is a computerized test given in all 50 states. Students must bring photo identification and the payment for testing on the day of the exam. Students are allowed to schedule their own exam. Pearson Vue administers the NCLEX and issues licenses when students pass the exam. The license is issued on the day of the exam in the event that test takers pass the test. The name of the student, now a licensed nurse, is entered into the state registry. A physical license is mailed to the newly licensed nurse's home. Nurses that were educated and licensed in another state must apply for licensure by endorsement.
Every two years a nurse in Ohio must renew their license. The fees may be paid online with a credit card or via mail. Failure to renew will result in an inactive license and additional fees when renewing. A lengthy lapse may result in the nurse needing to retake the NCLEX.
