Online learning programs, in New Jersey, do not offer all of the programs needed in order to fulfill the state's board of nursing approval or guidelines for nursing licensure.
New Jersey has quite a few educational programs for people that wish to become nurses. Most are classes that are held in community colleges. In order to join a nursing class you need to determine what type of nurse you want to be. Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) training takes around one year to complete and becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) takes two years for an Associate's (ASN) and four years for a Bachelor's (BSN). Beyond this are advanced nursing practice licenses that add at least four more years to the RN degree.
The National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) is given to all potential nursing licensees in every state. This test is referred to as NCLEX. It is a minimum of 75 questions, but can reach over 200 questions before a test taker is finished. It is an automated program that can determine the knowledge of the test taker and issues a passing or failing grade. You must apply to the board of nursing to take the test. When you send in your application you must also include payment for the processing fee. You will receive an approval letter in the mail, once you have this you will be able to find a location for testing, then schedule your test. Licenses are issued on the same day of testing if the test taker receives a passing grade. Failure to pass means you will need to re-apply for testing. This includes applying for testing and paying the related fees. Nurses from other states that want to live and work in New Jersey must apply for licensure by endorsement or retake the NCLEX if they are denied endorsement.
New Jersey requires renewal after two years. The state's board of nursing will mail notifications out about one month to six weeks before renewal is due. You may renew your license via mail or pay online with a credit card.
