To earn your nursing degree, in Michigan, you will begin by finding a training program. These programs are regulated by the state's board of nursing. There are specific rules that a program must follow in order to retain the board of nursing's approval. These rules are governed by the board of nursing's adherence to the National Council on Licensure's guidelines. Coursework for licensed practical nurse (LPN) may take twelve months. The next level is an ASN (associate's degree) for registered nurse, then BSN (bachelor's degree). The ASN takes around twenty four months and the BSN forty eight. Both LPN and RN programs include classwork and clinicals. Clinicals are the manual skills training portions of the programs. Nursing students may perform clinical training in hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
Pearson Vue conducts the testing for nurses. This test is known as the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and it is the same in all fifty states. Every nursing student that finishes school and wishes to continue into a nursing career will need to apply for and then take this exam. You must fill out the application for testing and mail it to the board of nursing along with the processing fee payment. The board of nursing will reply with approval to test or denial after processing. A denial is rare if the paperwork was filled out correctly. Your school will often list testing times and locations. When you go to the NCLEX you will be required to pay the testing fee and provide photo ID. If you pass the NCLEX your nursing license will be issued. It can take up to six weeks for your license to arrive in the mail. Your license will be searchable online for prospective employers.
Michigan requires that all nurses renew their license every twenty four months. As of 2011, the fee for license renewal is $60. Nurses may renew their license online or by mailing the fee.
