There are many opportunities available to people that decide to become a nurse in Florida. The Sunshine State has a huge population in the senior segment - senior citizens from all over the US flock to Florida during retirement. As a vacation destination there will always be jobs in healthcare - resorts may need nurses on duty, assisted living facilities may hire nurses, and hospitals always have room for nurses when tourists discover the not so wonderful points of local wildlife. Nurses that work in nursing homes provide medication passes, wound treatment, and other advanced functions that nurse assistants are not qualified or licensed to perform. In hospitals nurses may help deliver babies, assist doctors in operations, the emergency room, or supervise other nurses.
Florida does not endorse any online nursing school or program. It is possible to take online classes for prerequisites and for continued education, but as a whole there is no online program that can give any student a nursing degree that is legal in Florida. The reason for this is that written skills may be taught through a computer course easily, but the clinical part of the programs may not. It is impossible to teach someone how to respond to a live patient through a simulation at this time.
College courses may vary by length though most LPN programs are at least 12 months and RN programs are at least 24 months. Each advance will add at least one more year to the coursework. Moving from LPN to RN will require different prerequisites per school or program and before choosing a school the student should examine the courses carefully.
After finishing a nursing course a student will need to apply to take the nursing exam- NCLEX. This exam requires a $200 non-refundable deposit (this is the same in all states). The license must be renewed every 24 months. Florida does not participate in the nursing Compact- but a nurse may apply for a license through endorsement if they are in active and good standing with their home state or state they are licensed in.
Florida license fees are $224 and renewal is $145.
