A career in nursing is one of the best career moves available today. The rate of growth in the healthcare field can almost guarantee that a nurse will never be out of work. There is literally no shortage of jobs for nurses, both Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) and Registered Nurses (RN). As a potential nurse in, Colorado, you will be expected to fulfill certain requirements. These requirements are both educational and moral; ie: clean criminal background. Nurses provide treatments for injuries, pre and post surgical care, and pass medications so their criminal history must be free from certain activities such as physical and chemical abuse. Colorado is one of the states that participates in the National Licensure Compact. Nurses from other states that participate in the National Licensure Compact may practice in Colorado by endorsement.
Like most other states, Colorado does not recognize any internet based training program as fully accredited for providing the full range of training needed to become a nurse. You may complete prerequisite courses via online learning, but any course or website that claims to give you a full range of skills needed to pass the examination for licensing in Colorado is not legitimate.
All college courses for nursing, in Colorado, must be approved by the state's board of nursing. The courses available will vary by school, as will the length of the course. Most courses for LPN are about one year in length, while RN is a two year course. Advancing each degree from Associates to Bachelor's adds additional time and depending on the type of course chosen- part time or full time, the journey to being a nurse can be much longer. Students that are working while earning their degree often choose classes that compliment their work schedule.
Every student that graduates from a Colorado Board of Nursing approved nursing course must sit for and pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). The student must pay for testing and application fees at the time of examination. Once a license is issued to a passing student, it is valid for two years. Renewal fees are subject to change depending on the year issued and economics. The board of nursing keeps applications for licensure on file for up to one year if some information is missing and only destroys the documents after the year has passed.
